Assistive Technology
Assistive technology can be defined as technology solutions used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. AT refers to a range of devices, services, strategies, and practices that are developed and applied to help students overcome limitations they may face. Note taking technology, for example, is one example of AT used here at UConn.
The Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) has a Tech team to work with students to help identify technologies to assist with student needs and learning styles at no additional cost to the student.
Once a student has been approved for an assistive technology accommodation through working with their Disability Service Professional (DSP), they are encouraged to set up an appointment with CSDTech to learn more.
CSDTech Services
- Individual appointments with one of our Tech team members
Appointments are virtual (unless in-person is requested via an email to csdtech@uconn.edu once an appointment has been made) and can be booked through MyAccess - Training on assistive technology products offered, such as Notetaking software
- Loaning out equipment such as SmartPens, Digital Voice recorders, licensing software at no additional cost to students with the appropriate accommodation
- CSDTech Workshops on Notetaking software, SmartPens, Microsoft products, and more!
After meeting with a CSDTech team member, if a student would like to borrow equipment, they must fill out an Equipment Loan Form which CSDTech will provide. Equipment loans are typically short term, in most cases for one semester, and due back to the CSD prior to that semester ending or CSD reserves the right to place a hold on a student’s account and student will be held accountable for fee reimbursement for that equipment.
