Captioning or transcription services convert speech and audio information of multimedia content into a textual equivalent.  Captions are time-synced and integrated into multimedia content, while transcriptions provide the text in full separately from the multimedia content.

Students Requesting Captioning of Media


CSD will make every attempt to provide captioned materials as promptly as possible. However, late requests for the captioning of media may delay its delivery. Procedure
  1. Determine which classes you will need captioned media. Students are encouraged to contact their faculty members directly regarding required media (videos, podcasts, etc.).
  2. Students approved for this accommodation will receive access to the Captioned Media Request form as well as an e-mail from the CSD Tech Team with instructions on how to submit a request for captioned media.
  3. Go to the Student Captioned Media Request form on the CSD website to complete an online request form. Students may meet with a CSD Tech Team member for assistance completing this form. The CSD Tech Team can be reached at or in person at the CSD, Wilbur Cross, Room 204.
  4. CSD will work with your faculty to obtain and caption the media. Your faculty will provide access to the captioned media for you either in class, HuskyCT or other instructional method.

Instructors Requesting Captioning of Media


  • If you have a student enrolled in your course who is approved for captioned media, the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) will collaborate with you to coordinate captioning and transcription services for all media used in your course.

    Please follow the CSD’s captioning process below.  The process should begin immediately after receiving notification from the CSD and UConn Interpreting Services (UCIS).  The turn-around time for captioning requests can vary depending on the complexity of the subject matter, quality of the audio, and the type of media used.  All captioning requests MUST be submitted to the CSD at least 7 days in advance of its use in the course.

    You have the option to caption media yourself. Media must be captioned in a manner that is at least 99% accurate, synchronized, clear, and readable. Note that mechanically-generated captions must be manually edited for accuracy before distribution.  If you would like to caption your own media, please visit DIY Captioning hosted on the IT Accessibility website or contact the IT Accessibility Coordinator at or CETL – Educational Technologies at or call 860-486-5052.

    CSD Captioning Process

    NOTE: Please begin this process as soon as you receive notification of a student in your class approved for communication access. The CSD Faculty Captioning Request Form must be submitted at least 7 days in advance of their use in your class.

    *If the media you are using is already hosted on Kaltura or MediaSite, please skip to Step 3.

    1. Create a Kaltura Account
      All captioned media will be distributed through Kaltura (UConn supported system for hosting multi-media) so you will need to create a Kaltura account. For assistance, please visit Create a Kaltura Account or contact CETL – Educational Technologies at or call 860-486-5052.
    1. Prepare Media
      In order for CSD to process captioning, we will need a link to your media in the form of a URL. If you have media that is not on the web, please upload it to Kaltura and then proceed to step 3.     1. Submit Captioning Request – 7 days in advance!
      Fill out the CSD Faculty Captioning Request Form with the URL's to the media you will need captioned. Note that captioning can take up to 7 days, depending on the complexity of the request. It is recommended that you complete this process as soon as possible.

    1. Distribute Media
      Your request should process within 7 days of submission depending on the subject matter and you will be notified once it is complete. Your captioned media will be available in your Kaltura account under My Media. Once your captioned media is available, review the captions and notify us of any errors. Create a Kaltura Account

Kaltura is the only centrally-supported media platform at UConn and is available free for all students, faculty, and staff.  It is fully integrated with HuskyCT and UConn’s Single Sign-On system.  To generate your account, simply log in for the first time by following these simple steps:

  1. Visit 
  2. Log in with your UConn NetID
  3. Your account is set up

The landing page for your Kaltura account may look blank.  Click on the profile icon to select your media, upload new media, and browse related content. For more information about using Kaltura, see Upload Media to Kaltura.

Log in to Kaltura and follow the steps below. If you don't already have a Kaltura account, please follow the steps on the Create a Kaltura Account page before proceeding below.
