Alternate media provides individuals access to print material through different formats. Alternate media may be formatted and provided as electronic pdf files, audio files, large print material, and Braille. Due to copyright laws, students must show proof that they have purchased their books before they can receive them in an alternate format. All alternate media materials are intended for a student’s individual use and should not be shared with others. Any duplication of materials is prohibited.
Each semester, students approved for this accommodation can request books and course materials through the Alternate Formats Request form. Students will be provided with their alternate formats electronically.

Students Requesting Alternate Media
- Electronic text (e-text) from the publisher, which is provided to the student electronically
- Text scanned by the CSD with publisher permission
- Assistive Technology (AT) to read electronic text, enlarge print, or create audio files
- Determine which books/materials need to be requested for each class. Students may obtain book information for each class by accessing the UConn Bookstore’s online textbook search. Students are also encouraged to contact their faculty members directly regarding required texts.
- Students approved for this accommodation will receive access to the CSD Alternate Media Request form as well as an e-mail from the CSD Tech Team with instructions on how to submit a request for materials.
- Go to the CSD Alternate Media Request form on the CSD website to complete an online request form. Students may meet with a CSD Tech Team member for assistance completing this form. The CSD Tech Team can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or in person at the CSD, Wilbur Cross, Room 204.
- Provide proof of purchase of each book requested (receipt, invoice, e-mail confirmation, etc.) to the CSD prior to receiving materials. Proof of purchase should be submitted to the CSD Tech Team, either in person (Wilbur Cross, Room 204), via e-mail to email@example.com, or faxed to (860) 486-4412. Students may purchase materials from any source (e.g., UConn Bookstore, Amazon, etc.).
- Materials will be shared with students electronically for reading and download. Once the material has been received, students have the option of using Assistive Technology (AT) to have their text read aloud, enlarged, or converted into audio. - Determine required materials as early as possible prior to each semester in order to assure the provision of materials in a timely manner.
- Complete an online request form via the CSD Alternate Media Request form as early as possible prior to each term start date. - I understand that violation of this agreement will subject me to the University’s disciplinary process under the Office of Community Standards and The Student Code.
- Provide students approved for this accommodation with instructions on how to submit a request for materials. This includes access to the CSD Alternate Media Request form to submit an online request as well as access to the CSD Alternate Media Services website in order to view and download materials.
- Provide materials in a timely manner and in the student’s requested format to the greatest extent possible.
- Resolve any issues that arise regarding this accommodation.
- Collaborate with students and the CSD in order to ensure equal access to course materials to students with visual, physical and print-based (e.g., learning disabilities) disabilities. According to legal mandates, course materials must be provided in an alternate format to students within seven days of their request.
- In order to assure students timely access to all course materials, faculty should consider the following practices:
- Provide the Bookstore with a list of all course textbooks and course readers a minimum of seven weeks in advance of the term start date;
- Provide course materials in digital text readable formats (e.g., accessible PDF's); the Library offers Scan on Demand services to faculty, providing scanning and electronic delivery of chapters and articles from print resources owned by the UConn Libraries; details are available at the following web page: UConn Library Scan on Demand.
- Provide supplemental course materials well in advance of assignment due dates;
- Provide verbal descriptions of visual aids or graphics during class and alternate text based descriptions of visuals and graphics within course materials.
